Answer:You bet! Girls or boys, it makes no difference... The Ontdekhoek is nice for all children.

Can you bring your own food & drink?

to top
Answer:

You may of course, but Mums, don't bring too much: the kids don't have time for it! The Ontdekhoek has cola, orange, chocomel and lemonade, so you don't have to bring it with you. You can also buy crisps at the Ontdekhoek.

You can also bring birthday cake...only if the people in the Ontdekhoek can have a piece!...but no candles because the Fire Service do not allow it.

Can you park there?

Answer:Yes, you can park your car there. If you click on the question ‘Where is it?’ then all the directions are clear.
In Den Bosch, Zwolle and Sittard you can park your car for free in school grounds.
Rotterdam is the only place that you'll have to pay for parking and you can use your ‘chipknip’. These can be found all around the Ontdekhoek.

Can I leave the children alone?

to top
Answer:

The Ontdekhoek does not take responsibility for the children, the parents maintain responsibility throughout the visit.

It goes well mostly with the following play rules:

  1. If the children are 9 years or older.
  2. If the children have already been to the Ontdekhoek at least twice.
  3. If they bring a little friend.
  4. If their father or mother can be called on their mobile to come and collect them earlier.
  5. If the people from the Ontdekhoek allow it.

What can parents do? Join in?

to top
Answer:Parents may join in but not explain everything! They can take a friend to relax and have a chat with whilst the children discover.

Who's behind this?

to top
Answer:The Ontdekhoek is a private initiative which works only with paid staff. We depend on the entrance fees for our income, as the subsidy received is less than seven cents per Euro earned. We do however receive support in the form of our accommodation, and this benefit is reflected in the entrance fee.

Proof of the success of the Ontdekhoek formula lies in the fact that we have slowly but surely been able to expand on our activities since the start in 1986.
There are nowadays five Ontdekhoek locations in the Netherlands. We welcome around 100,000 children per year!

While visiting, check out the children's faces and the length of time they're fascinated and concentrated. Or read our guest book for the reactions from kids and adults alike. Isn't it wonderful that they still remember their visit to the Ontdekhoek so well, even ten years on? Apparently we always make a lasting impression. And what could be more fun than to learn things voluntarily and remember them, rather than having to learn and subsequently forgetting them!

As far as we know, we're unique in our approach, and we belong to the world top in the category of small, so-called Science Centres. Theoretically speaking, we're also very advanced in the augmentation of our practice of 'informal learning' or as it is known nowadays 'free choice learning'. Most of the Ontdekhoek components won't be found anywhere else.

However wonderful this all sounds, we couldn't survive without your financial contribution to our Ontdekhoek, without which we would simply have to close our doors. This forces us to stay alert on many fronts, which we have always found very stimulating.
